What is blast cleaning?

Blast cleaning is a highly effective surface cleaning method. It involves propelling abrasive material, such as glass grit, at a defaced or dirty surface at high velocity to gently etch away imperfections, thereby restoring the surface to its original lustre.

What is dry ice blasting?

Dry ice blasting is a type of blast cleaning that uses dry ice to decontaminate surfaces. As such, it is particularly useful for surfaces and areas where food is processed.

Grit and shot blasting: what is it?

Grit blasting and shot blasting involves blasting all manner of surfaces, such as steel and other ferrous metals, with one of a number of materials - including silicon carbide and even walnut shells. The process is used to prime surfaces for painting, welding or sealing.

What is sand blasting?

Sand blasting was a popular form of blast cleaning. The use of sand is now illegal because it created harmful silica dust particles that could cause life-threatening diseases.

Nowadays, J Radford Group instead use one of five grades of environmentally friendly glass grit to safely and thoroughly etch away imperfections.

Will blast cleaning damage my surfaces?

Although blast cleaning etches away at a surface, it does not permanently damage your surfaces. It will remove the top layer of a surface, but will only remove unlevel, defaced or dirty layers.

As our expert team have 30 years of experience blast cleaning London’s surfaces, you can rest assured that your surfaces are in the safest of hands with J Radford Group.

How messy is blast cleaning?

Blast cleaning can create a lot of dust, but if your surface is outside then this shouldn’t be a problem.

However, if your surfaces are inside or you don’t want to disturb your surroundings, we can offer an encapsulation and protection service instead. This will keep dust to a minimum.
